Botox and Fillers Q&A

What is Botox®?

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin, an injectable medication that has been safely used for decades to diminish the appearance of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles. When Dr. Sandhu injects Botox into precisely targeted muscles, the medication blocks the nerve signals that trigger muscle contraction. As a result, the muscles relax.

Botox’s ability to relax muscles makes it the perfect treatment for wrinkles that are caused by repetitive muscle movements, including:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead furrows

Botox also effectively lifts your eyebrows. You can see the difference a few days after your treatment, and then your results last up to four months.* You can choose to have another treatment when Botox wears off.

How do dermal fillers work?

You have a thin layer of fat just under the surface of your skin. In your face, this fat is essential to maintain smooth skin and a youthful appearance. As you get older, the fat thins out and tends to fall under the effect of gravity. As a result, your cheeks become hollow, and your skin becomes loose, which contributes to wrinkles.

Dermal fillers are specially formulated to replace that layer of fat. Many are made from hyaluronic acid, which is safe because it’s a natural component of your skin. Depending on where Dr. Sandhu injects the dermal filler, it can:

  • Smooth away lines and wrinkles around your nose and mouth
  • Eliminate dark circles and hollows under your eyes
  • Restore volume in your cheeks
  • Diminish vertical lip lines
  • Contour your jawline
  • Enhance your lips
  • Lift your cheeks

Like Botox, dermal fillers are gradually absorbed back into your body. But your results last 6-18 months, depending on the type of filler that Dr. Sandhu injects.*

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction, uses fine needles to gently puncture your skin. These controlled wounds activate your body’s natural healing response, which in turn boosts the production of collagen and elastin.

As you get older, your skin produces less collagen and elastin which results in sagging skin and wrinkles. As microneedling increases the two proteins, your skin becomes more firm and resilient.

Microneedling effectively improves problems such as:

  • Loose skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Brown spots
  • Acne scars

Microneedling is most often done on the face, neck, arms, and hands. However, it can restore the appearance of your skin anywhere on your body.
